Direct Assessment of Student Academic Achievement – Procedure
I. Direct Assessment of Lakota Language Cultural proficiency-
a. The Lakota Studies Department Chairperson will provide the Lakota language cultural proficiency scores of students to the Assessment Director on a semester by semester basis.
II. Direct Assessment of Computer Literacy
a. The Information Technology Department will provide the computer literacy scores in general education technology courses to the Director of Assessment on a semester by semester basis.
III. Direct Assessment of General Education Curriculum
a. College center personnel and Foundational Studies will proctor the Accuplacer exam for students entering college and determine placement.
b. College center personnel and Director of Assessment will proctor the Proficiency Profile exam for students graduating with an Associates or Bachelor’s degree.
i. The College Registrar will provide a list of potential graduates to each college center director and Director of Assessment.
ii. The Director of Assessment will send through the United States Postal Service a letter to all graduates notifying them of the requirement for graduation.
iii. College center counselors/director will also be responsible for informing students of the testing requirement, locations and schedules. 
c. The general education goals and objectives will be assessed on a semester basis.  
i. Objectives to be assessed will be randomly selected on a rotational basis until all objectives have been assessed.  
ii. Director of Assessment will post this schedule to the Assessment Web page.
iii. Courses randomly chosen for general education assessment will also be posted to the Assessment Web page.
iv. The utilization of the standardized institutional general education rubrics will be used to assess the randomly selected objectives within the courses.
v. Each department is responsible to determine the artifact to be assessed in relation to the objectives randomly selected and scored on the institutional rubric.
vi. Each department will provide a compilation of the data within the department assessment report on a yearly basis.
IV. Direct Assessment of Foundational and Vocational Department Curriculum
a. Courses and Objectives to be assessed will be randomly selected on a rotational basis until all courses and objectives have been assessed.  
b. Each department is responsible to determine the course artifacts to be assessed and a standardized department rubric
c. Foundational Studies will be assigned the task of compiling data in relation to the Accuplacer exam and include the data in the yearly assessment report.
d. Applied Science Department will be assigned the task of compiling data in relation to the trades programs and include the data in the yearly assessment report. 
V. Direct Assessment of Academic Department Curriculum 
a. Courses and Objectives to be assessed will be randomly selected on a rotational basis until all courses and objectives have been assessed.  
b. Each department is responsible to determine the course artifacts to be assessed and a standardized department rubric
c. Departments will utilize a standardized exam for their academic program, if available.  If not available, departments will use a peer-reviewed or locally developed exam to measure the degree.
d. If no exams are available then departments need to find a degree assessment; such as, capstone courses, internships, juried reviews of senior projects, essays blind scored across the department, portfolios and externally reviewed exhibitions/performances.  (This list is not exhaustive.)
e. Each academic department will document the cycle of assessment utilized for the academic year and report data in the yearly assessment report.
